Indian Sports Calendar in 2024: Events to watch in second week of January
Two tournaments that offer Paris Olympics 2024 quota are scheduled this week.
A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. The badminton season is scheduled to begin in Malaysia which will soon be followed by the Indian Open and Indonesia Masters. Indian men’s football team will be participating in month-long AFC Asia Cup and the domestic season will be held simultaneously with the commencement of Super Cup.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (January 08-14) in the Indian sports calendar:
Major events to watch in second week of January in Indian Sports Calendar
Badminton
The first BWF World Tour tournament this season is scheduled to be held in Malaysia. All the major shuttlers will be taking part in the prestigious event which is a Super 1000 level tournament. HS Prannoy alongside Satwik-Chirag continued to lead the Indian contingent.
- January 9-14: BWF Malaysia Open
Cricket
Afghanistan is scheduled to tour India for the second time in the history of international cricket. The week long tour comprises of three match T20I series and the tournament is set to feature the youngsters who have made their mark in the IPL and domestic circuits.
- January 11-17: Afghanistan tour of India (men’s)
Fencing
Olympian Bhavani Devi is scheduled to take part in the Tunis Grand Prix from January 12th. She had a good season last year winning the bronze medal at Asian Fencing Championships.
- January 12: Tunis Sabre Grand Prix (Sabre)
Football
Asia premier football tournament AFC Men’s Asia Cup is returning post the 2019 edition. India is placed in group B alongside Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria. The domestic season – Super Cup – continues to progress alongside the Asia Cup.

Hockey
The FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers will help India attempt another shot for qualifying directly for Paris Olympics 2024. A total of eight teams are scheduled to take part in the competition with the top three progressing to the Olympics.
- January 13-19: FIH Hockey Olympics Qualifiers
Handball
The Asian continental championships is the first major tournament for the handball players. India is placed in Group C alongside Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Japan. The top 5 teams at the end of the championships qualify for the World Handball Championships 2025.
- January 11-25: Asian Handball Championships
Shooting
A total of 16 quotas Rifle/Pistol and eight in shotgun are up for grabs at the Asian Shooting Championships 2024. The Indian rifle contingent has already secured all the quotas on offer with pistol and shotgun shooters aiming for the remaining quotas. Till date, 13 players have secured qualification for the NOC – NRAI – two short of Tokyo Olympics mark.
- January 5-18: Asian Olympic Qualifiers Rifle/Pistol
- January 12-22: Asian Olympic Qualifiers Shotgun
Table Tennis
The WTT Star Contender series is set to begin in Doha from the second week of January. Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal are the two Indians scheduled to feature in the main draw in the singles category while the others battle out in the qualifying draws.

Tennis
The first major grand slam of the season – Australian Open – is set to begin on January 14th. Rohan Bopanna alongside Matthew Ebden are seeded third in the men’s doubles category with Yuki Bhambri confirming his presence in the main draw partnering Robin Haase.
- January 14-28: Australian Open (Tennis)
Wrestling
A total of 13 wrestlers are set to battle out in Zagreb in the first ranking series tournament in UWW calendar. The series plays a significant role in determining the seeds for World Championships which will be held later in the year.
