Esha Singh wins gold in women's 10m air pistol, secures 15th Paris Olympics quota for India

Esha Singh, the 19-year-old shooting sensation, clinched the gold medal and a 15th Paris Olympics quota for India in shooting after a podium finish in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Asian Olympic Qualifiers 2024 in Jakarta on Monday.
Singh, who became the national champion in 2018, scored 243.1 points in the final, leaving behind Pakistan’s Kishmala Talat, who settled for the silver with 236.3 points. India’s Rhythm Sangwan bagged the bronze medal with 214.5 points, while Surbhi Rao finished sixth with 154.0 points.
The Asian Qualifiers, which also serve as the Asian Shooting Championships 2024, saw three Indians – Singh, Sangwan, and Rao – making it to the final of the women’s 10m air pistol event. Interestingly, Singh was the lowest-ranked Indian among the three in the qualification round, where she scored 578 points. Sangwan and Rao scored 579 and 579 points respectively in qualification.
Singh, Sangwan, and Rao also won gold medal for India in women’s 10m air pistol team event, where they scored a total of 1736 points. South Korea and Indonesia won the silver and bronze medals respectively in the team event.

Singh, who started shooting in 2014, has won several medals at the junior level, including two gold medals at the Asian Junior Championships in 2019 and a silver medal at the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany in 2019.
Singh’s quota was India’s first in the women’s 10m air pistol event for Paris Olympics 2024. Earlier, Varun Tomar had secured the 14th quota for India in the men’s 10m air pistol event, where he also won the gold medal with a score of 239.6 points in the final.
