This was the first raking series of the 2024 calendar.

Aman Sehrawat registered his fourth consecutive victory on technical superiority to clinch the gold medal at the Zagreb Open Wrestling Ranking Series after defeating China’s Zou Wanhao. The Zagreb Open wrestling tournament was the first international competition for Indian grapplers this year as well as the first Ranking Series in the 2024 calendar.

The win of Aman has also propelled him to the top 10 in the world rankings. This was the second meeting between both Aman and Zou. Both of them had earlier met in the semifinals of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana where Aman was victorious with a margin of 7-4.

However, the main objective of Aman still remains the Olympic medal which can be guessed from the five rings in his room. For all his achievements, his task of getting to Paris will not be an easy one.

Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 Gold

Aman sprung up into prominence for the first time during the Asian Wrestling Championships where he won the gold medal. He won the gold medal by defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov (9-4), who took silver.

But the young and dynamic wrestler is not satisfied with the Asian Championships gold. According to Aman “My gold medal is at the Asian level. There are other stronger wrestlers from USA, Russia and Europe. I still have to beat them.”

One can understand the hunger in his belly for the shimmering golden metal at the Olympics. Given the promise he has shown at the junior and senior level, an Olympic gold is actually a good possibility for the 20-year-old.

Other notable achievements of Aman Sehrawat

Aman started his caravan of victory with back-to-back gold medals at the National Championships in 2020 and 2021 in the 57 kg category. This was followed by the Tunisia Ranking Series in the same category in 2022. Subsequently, the young wrestler from Haryana won the U23 World Championship in Spain.

With big dreams in his mind and a fire in his heart, the 57 kg category in freestyle wrestling might turn out to be an interesting and tricky turf for many experienced grapplers out there.
