Anahat Singh storms into Squash U17 British Junior Open 2024 finals

Indian squash sensation, Anahat Singh, has once again made headlines as she stormed into the finals of the Girl’s U17 Singles at the ongoing British Junior Open. The 15-year-old prodigy registered a straight sets 11-7, 11-9, 12-10 victory over Egypt’s Barb Sameh in the semifinals.

Born on March 13, 2008, in Delhi to parents Gursharan Singh, a lawyer, and Tani Vadehra Singh, an interior designer, Anahat switched to squash at the age of eight. She rose to prominence after winning the Girls U11 title at the British Junior Open Squash in January 2019.

Anahat Singh has already won the Scottish Open on her trip to Europe as she won the girls’ under-19 title at the 2023 Scottish Junior Open in Edinburgh. Singh defeated Robyn McAlpine 11-6, 11-1, and 11-5 in the final.

Anahat, who hasn’t dropped a single set on her way to the finals, is now poised to add an 18th title to her already impressive tally. If she succeeds, she will become only the second Indian to win the prestigious tournament twice, following in the footsteps of one of India’s top players Joshna Chinappa.

Chinappa clinched the U17 Girl’s title in 2003 and followed it up with the U19 title in 2005. Other Indians who have won the British Junior Open include Sourav Ghosh (Boy’s U19 in 2004), Mahesh Mangaonkar (Boy’s U15 in 2009), Velavan Senthilkumar (Boy’s U19 in 2017), and Dipika Pallikal (Girl’s U17 in 2008)2.

Anahat, who was the youngest athlete to represent India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, has been a beacon of hope for Indian squash. Her journey to the finals of the British Junior Open 2024 has been nothing short of inspirational, and her performance has captured the attention of squash enthusiasts worldwide.

Anahat will face the winner of the match between Nadien Elhammamy and Lauren Baltayan on 7th January.
