This is the third time women's team finished 2nd in the competition.
In a stunning display of determination and sportsmanship, the Indian women's rugby team secured a commendable silver medal in the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy 2023 for the third consecutive time. The tournament, held at the Onazia Training Pitch in Doha, Qatar from November 3 to November 4, 2023, saw the Indian women's team face fierce competition.
The finals proved to be an intense battle as the Indian women, led by the experienced Vahbiz Bharucha, went head-to-head against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the first half, the Indian women displayed remarkable skill, narrowing the gap to just two points after a spectacular try by Shikha Yadav. However, in the second half, the UAE emerged dominant, breaking through the Indian defense and securing a total of 19 points, ultimately clinching the gold medal.
The journey to the finals was characterized by the Indian Women's Rugby Team's exceptional performance. They overwhelmed Iran in the semifinals, achieving a resounding victory with a score of 34-0. In the earlier stages of the tournament, the team stamped their authority by defeating Guam with a score of 14-7 and Mongolia with an astonishing 36-0 victory, securing their position at the top of the table.
Rahul Bose, President of the Indian Rugby Football Union, commended the women's team for their consistency, stating, "Three consecutive silver medals at the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy is a commendable result for the women’s team. It is a testament to the consistency of their performances over the last few years and the pathway of players that allow us to consistently compete with such calibre."
Captain Vahbiz Bharucha expressed her pride in the team's performance, saying, "Winning the silver again is special, but the team is eager to continue the work that each player has been putting in to convert the color of this medal to Gold. Personally, I am extremely proud of the way the team has played against formidable sides and has showcased great character at a stage as big as this. This is the most important event of the year for the team, and we will come home knowing that we gave it our absolute best."
In a parallel competition, the Indian Men's Rugby Sevens Team also achieved an impressive feat, securing the fifth position. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering they were ranked ninth in the previous edition. Led by Prince Khatri, the men's team displayed resilience and strength, competing against a strong field of opponents.
Their journey included a dominant victory over Iraq, where they emerged victorious with a commanding score of 47-0. Although they narrowly lost to Afghanistan with a score of 5-7 in the subsequent match, they fought their way into contention for the Bowl Cup. In a crucial victory, they defeated Uzbekistan with a score of 24-7, setting the stage for the 5th-6th position match against Qatar.
In a thrilling contest, the Indian men's Rugby team managed to secure the fifth position by defeating Qatar with a score of 19-14. Mohit Khatri's last-minute try was a game-changer, allowing India to claim the fifth spot even as Qatar was within touching distance of victory.
The outstanding performances of both the Indian Women's and Men's Rugby Teams in the Asia Rugby Sevens Trophy underscore the growing strength and potential of Indian rugby on the international stage. With their commitment to excellence and consistent performances, they are poised to be formidable contenders in the years to come.
