Mary Kom: 2021 Olympic is another chance to fulfill my dream
The star boxer also felt that the absence of a sparring partner has been a problem in her preparation.
Like any Indian athlete aspiring for gold in the Olympics, MC Mary Kom also saw her dreams take a halt when the competition was postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic around the globe.
The hard-hitting boxer is still adjusting to the new life under lockdown around the country, but her intense training methods have taken a hit due to the restrictions.
Mary Kom spoke to the Times of India about her life during the current period and when asked how challenging the current time is, she said, “This time of pandemic is challenging for all of us in different ways. It has been the same for me and my family. We have to embrace this time, which was never expected and deal with it.”
She was clearly disappointed at the postponement of the Olympics and explained her thoughts, “I am okay with whatever it is, as this is something we can’t help or have control over it. Of course it has disturbed my entire plans for the Olympics. But I am positive and I know that all things happen for the good.”
Mary Kom is also hopeful that this delay now gives her more time to focus on her training and get better prepared for the competition. She said, “I can’t call it better, but am accepting the fact that it does give me much more time to be well prepared to take on the best in the world. Now let’s hope things become normal soon and we can all start preparing.”
However the lack of a sparring partner at the moment is hindering her plans. She explained, “Every boxer would definitely say yes. Sparring is an integral part of boxing, where we apply our learning, thoughts and counter. It’s definitely been a problem.”
Also explaining how the 2021 Olympics will be different from 2012, she asserted, “2012 was a motivation to do better and 2021 is another chance to fulfill my dream. I am sure I will give my 100 per cent in achieving it. Let’s hope I can give my best and bring glory to our country.”
Finally, Mary Kom gave a valuable piece of advice to budding boxers who are aspiring the reach the heights she has. “I have always said this, sports or boxing is now not just a game but it has become one of the best career opportunities."
“You can earn good fortune, fame and above all, your well being and laurels for your country as well. If you are gifted and determined, grab it with both hands and strive to excel. But remember, competitions are tough everywhere. Unless you are serious, there is nothing we can reap in this cut-throat world,” she further added.
