[Watch] Suryakumar Yadav gets the ‘best fielder’ medal for his catch of David Miller from BCCI secretary Jay Shah
Suryakumar Yadav took a mind-blowing catch at the boundary line to dismiss David Miller in the last over.
Suryakumar Yadav might not have done much with the bat in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa in Barbados, but he did his job in the field with a spectacular catch on the field.
India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first at the Kensington Oval. Thanks to a brilliant 76 by Virat Kohli and his 72-run stand with Axar Patel (47), India posted 176/6 in 20 overs. Shivam Dube also contributed to the cause, after India had lost early wickets.
In reply, South Africa also lost early wickets of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram. But, Quinton de Kock (39) and Heinrich Klaasen (52) threatened to take the game away from the Indian team. This included a 24-run over by Axar Patel, in which Klaasen smacked three sixes and one four.
However, Hardik Pandya removed Klaasen soon after and the equation boiled down to 16 runs in 6 balls after Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh bowled brilliantly in the 18th and 19th overs respectively.
Hardik Pandya was given the responsibility of bowling the last over and on the first ball, he bowled a full toss and David Miller the ball in the air straight towards long on. It seemed like it would sail over for a six. But Suryakumar Yadav ran in and took the catch.
But seeing momentum taking him over the boundary, he threw the ball in the air, went out of the boundary, and came back in to complete the catch.
Suryakumar Yadav gets the best fielder medal by Jay Shah
This ended all hopes for South Africa of a win and India finished victors by 7 runs. The official Instagram handle of the BCCI shared a special video of the ceremony and T Dilip hailed the entire team for the way.
“We talk about rising to the occasion in big games today. We just didn’t rise, but we conquered today. The intensity, the camaraderie, the resilience, that we are shown today and also throughout the tournament, we are nothing short of extraordinary stuff like a pack of wolves. Well, Rahul and Rohit keep saying everybody knew their role. But together we hunted every opportunity that came our way, leaving no stone unturned,” T Dilip said.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah was present in the dressing room to present the medal to Suryakumar Yadav, who then flaunted both his fielding and winner’s medals.
“Thank you so much, sir, for giving me this opportunity and collecting this medal from Jay sir,” Suryakumar said.
