Rahul Dravid agreed to a contract extension after the World Cup 2023 to stay till T20 World Cup 2024.

India batter Suryakumar Yadav has made an interesting revelation that after India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 victory, head coach Rahul Dravid thanked Rohit Sharma for convincing him to stay in his role following the loss in the final of the World Cup 2023.

Dravid bowed out from the role of Indian team’s head coach with a T20 World Cup title to his name. His extended contract expired at the end of the tournament.

Dravid had taken a contract extension last year after his first contract, which began in 2021, had expired at the conclusion of the World Cup 2023 in November.

India lost the final of the tournament at home to Australia and Dravid was pondering strongly over not being in the job further. But, he was persuaded by captain Rohit Sharma and BCCI secretary Jay Shah to continue in his role for a few more months till the T20 World Cup 2024 in June this year.

Rahul Dravid didn’t want to continue after World Cup 2023 final loss: Suryakumar

Suryakumar revealed that Dravid thanked Rohit for convincing him to stay to have one more attempt at an ICC trophy.

Suryakumar revealed to The Indian Express, “In the end, he (Dravid) came and thanked Rohit and said, ‘Thank you, Rohit, for that phone call in November’, because he didn’t want to continue after (India’s loss in the final of) the 50-over World Cup but Rohit and Jay sir (BCCI secretary Jay Shah) convinced him to stay.”

Generally a calm and composed person, Dravid expressed his emotions and let them out in full flow for a few seconds when he was handed the trophy during the team’s celebration. The clip of Dravid celebrating with the trophy has gone viral.

Suryakumar said, “That 30-second clip when he took the trophy in his hand and screamed – that moment when he expressed his happiness. I think I will save that clip for life.”
