Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) is one of the youngest and top AEW stars, who has been inthe company since the beginning. He stood undefeated for almost a year and a half, he held the Dynamite Diamond Ring for more than four years, and is the current AEW World Champion on his first reign. Although having a huge success in AEW, MJF has always been referencing WWE and expressed his wish to work there, even on AEW television. He previously revealed that he didn’t sign a contract extension with AEW and his contract is ending by January 1, 2024.

MJF’s match at AEW Worlds End

Ahead of his contract nearing to end, MJF defended his AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe at AEW Worlds End on December 30, 2023, where he lost his title in a hard fought match with shoulder injuries and bad hip. Maxwell became unconscious to Joe’s rear neck choke and dropped his title after 406 days (longest).

After the match he was betrayed by his friend Adam Cole, who was revealed to be the Devil in the story, who came with fellow masked men (Roderick Strong, Matt Taven, Wardlow and Mike Bennett).

MJF released from AEW roster

After a hell of a night and his contract nearing to end, Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that MJF has sustained a plethora of injuries during his AEW championship reign. However he was adamant to be on television as he is influential on his creativity. Most of the internally within AEW expect that he could insist an absence from television after AEW Worlds End.

As his contract is up, MJF has officially been removed from the AEW roster on the company’s official website page. However most of the fans online were confused if this is a part of the storyline or if he actually got released.

A recent report from Haus of Wrestling reported that they heard from the high-up WWE officials that MJF had already signed a deal with AEW last year and the bidding war, his contract being up, are only a part of the storyline. However there isn’t any official confirmation from both the ends. So we need to wait until an actual update release.
