Off-spinner Harkirat Bajwa is part of Australia squad for the ICC U19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa.
ICC U19 World Cup 2024 is all set to begin on 19th January. India are the most successful side in the ICC U19 World Cup. They have won the title five times so for since it began in 1988. Australia are second with three U19 World Cup titles in 14 editions. They will be looking to get close to India’s number in the upcoming event.
Cricket Australia picked two Indian-origin cricketers in their travelling squad for the mega youth event of cricket. Harkirat Bajwa and Harjas Singh have been picked to represent Australia U19 team in the upcoming U19 World Cup. Coming from a humble background, Harkirat will have a huge responsibility on his shoulders when he wears the yellow jersey for the second time.
Who is Harkirat Bajwa?
Off-spinner Harkirat Bajwa is son of a taxi driver in Melbourne and the upcoming ICC U19 World Cup will be a big leap for the youngster in his career and life. Harkirat Bajwa was born in Mohali, Punjab but his family migrated to Australia in 2012. Bajwa’s love for the game started when he held a wooden plank as a bat for the first time in his backyard at the age of seven. He started playing cricket in his backyard with his uncle and dreamt of playing for Australian cricket team.
Harkirat Bajwa’s first ever bat was a wooden plank, he began his professional journey with Revesby Workers Cricket Club. He was first introduced as a substitute player for the club and from there he began his journey to now in Australian U19 side. Harkirat Bajwa also represented Australia in the U19 World Cup in West Indies in 2020. His ultimate dream is to represent Australia in international cricket.
Gurinder Sandhi, Tanveer Sangha, and Jason Sangha are a few notable Indian-origin names who have played for Australia in the U19 World Cup history. Gurinder Sandhu and Tanveer Sangha have played international cricket for Australia in limited-overs cricket as well. Australian team are placed in group C of ICC U19 World Cup 2024 along with Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Australia will open their campaign against Namibia on 22nd January in Kimberley.
