Indian star batter Virat Kohli won’t be part of IND vs AFG 1st T20I in Mohali on January 11.

Cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the clash between India and Afghanistan in the first of the three-match T20I series, set to kick off on January 11th in Mohali. This series holds special significance as it marks India’s final T20I assignment before the much-anticipated ICC T20 World Cup in June 2024.

After a gap of 14 months, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma rejoined India’s T20I squad following their semi-final loss against England in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. The prospect of witnessing the formidable duo back in action had sparked anticipation among fans.

Virat Kohli to miss the first T20I against Afghanistan

Indian head coach Rahul Dravid during the pre-match press conference disclosed that Kohli would miss the first T20I against Afghanistan due to personal reasons. Dravid, addressed the media acknowledging the disappointment surrounding Kohli’s absence. He said that, “Virat Kohli will miss the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali due to personal reasons.” He clarified that it was a personal decision made by the cricketer, emphasizing the need to respect the player’s privacy during such times.

Kohli’s absence will leave a void in the team’s batting line-up. Rohit Sharma, taking charge as the captain, will have to strategize with a slightly altered squad, showcasing the depth and adaptability of Indian team. The first T20I against Afghanistan becomes an opportunity for other players to step up and prove their mettle, ensuring the team maintains its competitive edge in the absence of Kohli.

India will play the other two T20Is at Indore and Bengaluru on 14th and 17th January, 2024.
