USA or India? All Indian origin cricketers named in USA squad for ICC U19 World Cup 2024

USA announced their squad for ICC U19 World Cup 2024 on 27th December, 2023.

United States of America (USA Cricket) announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2024 to be played in South Africa. USA will be making their under-19 World Cup return after 14 years. USA failed to enter into the tournament after ICC U19 World Cup 2010 played in New Zealand. USA have played only two editions of the U19 World Cup in their history.

Surprisingly, all the players selected in the USA U19 squad belong to Indian origin. Not a single USA origin player found a place in the team. There’s a high possibility that all of the players included in the squad might’ve born or have USA citizenship, but the USA side looks more like a second-string India U19 team rather than from the United States of America. Cricket in the USA is mainly popular among the South Asian community, but the Indians seems to have dominated the entire youth setup in the American cricket.

USA played in the U19 World Cup 2006 in Sri Lanka and then in 2010. USA Cricket decided to make some changes to their team that had successful regional qualifiers in Toronto. The selectors were having a close watch on the squad in their National Championship camps along with the tour to Trinidad and then decided to make a few changes

Rishi Ramesh to lead USA in ICC U19 World Cup 2024

The 18-year-old boy from Texas, Rishi Ramesh was appointed as captain of USA side for the upcoming U19 World Cup in South Africa. All-rounder Rishi Ramesh is a right-hand batter and leg spinner. Rishi plays for Irving Mustangs Club in the North Texas Cricket Association. He was also chosen as MVP in USA U19 National Championships.

Chairman of the U19 Selection committee, Amer Afzaluddin said, “Selecting the squad for the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup was a challenging yet rewarding process. We have carefully considered the performances and potential of each player, and we believe this squad represents the best combination for success in South Africa.”

United States of America are part of group A of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2024 in South Africa. India, Bangladesh, and Ireland are also part of the same group. USA will be playing their opening encounter against Ireland at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein on 19th January. USA will be taking on India in the final league game of group A on 28th January in Bloemfontein
