During Chris Silverwood’s tenure as head coach, Sri Lanka lifted Asia Cup 2022 trophy.

Sri Lanka cricket team head coach Chris Silverwood has resigned from the post following his team’s poor show at the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Silverwood became the head coach of the Island Nation in April 2022, soon after his stint with the England team, which ended with a 0-4 loss against Australia in the Ashes.

Since then, the 49-year-old Silverwood has been with the Sri Lankan team, and recently, in April, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) extended his tenure until the T20 World Cup 2024. The 49-year-old Silverwood’s exit comes after legendary cricketer Mahela Jayawardene also resigned as consultant coach.

Under Silverwood, the Island Nation had a dismal run at the ongoing T20 World Cup. In Group D, Sri Lanka played four games and won just one match.

Lanka’s one group stage fixture against Nepal was abandoned due to rain. Lanka’s only victory came against the Netherlands by 83 runs. Lanka finished third in their group with just three points to their name and failed to reach the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.

Chris Silverwood resigns as Sri Lanka head coach due to personal reasons

The 49-year-old Silverwood said that he had lengthy conversations with his family and after that he took the decision from stepping down as the Sri Lanka men’s cricket team head coach.

“Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home.” Silverwood was quoted as saying in SLC’s release.

“It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket and I will be taking away many fond memories,” SLC release said.

Under Silverwood’s stint as the head coach, Sri Lanka lifted the Asia Cup trophy in 2022. Lanka also finished as the runners-up in the Asia Cup 2023 edition.
