She is first archer to clinch under 18 and Senior World Championships in same year.

In a remarkable feat for Indian archery, 17-year-old Aditi Gopichand Swami has been nominated for the esteemed World Games Athlete of the Year Award 2023. This nomination follows an exceptional year for the young archer, who made history by becoming India’s first individual World Archery Champion and the youngest titleholder in the modern era.

Aditi’s ascent to the pinnacle of archery has been truly extraordinary. In August 2023, she secured the gold medal in both the compound women’s team and individual events at the World Archery Championships in Berlin. She also contributed to the women’s compound team gold medal victory alongside Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Parneet Kaur.

At the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Aditi once again stood on the podium twice, winning a gold (women’s compound team) and a bronze (women’s compound individual). She also made history by becoming the first player to win the Under 18 World Championship and the Senior World Championship in the same year.

Aditi is the sixth archer, the fourth compound player, and the third woman to be nominated for this prestigious award in its decade-long history. If Aditi secures the award, she will be the first Indian archer to do so.

The voting will continue until the end of January, with only the top ten making it past an initial cut-off on 22 January. The public can cast their vote once per day. The shortlisted athletes also include four-time jiu-jitsu world champion Faisal Al Ketbi of UAE, American Lacrosse star Brennan O’Neill, and several other athletes from sports like baseball, roller sports, and canoeing.

Fans can vote once every 24 hours on the World Games website. Each vote involves selecting two candidates – your first-choice candidate receives two votes, and a second-choice candidate receives one vote. A vote for only one candidate will not be counted. Voters can change their choice daily, but most tend to prioritize their favorite by consistently making that candidate their first choice.

From 12.00 GMT on January 22, the competition will be narrowed down to 10 candidates, and a new vote count will begin. The voting lines will close on January 31, 12.00 GMT.
