The competition will take place in Doha from December 4 to 14.
Five Indian weightlifters, including Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu, will participate at the Weightlifting IWF Grand Prix II 2023 competition, which will take place in Doha, Qatar, from December 4 (Monday). The event, a Paris 2024 Olympic qualifier, will conclude on December 14.
The Weightlifting IWF Grand Prix II 2023 tournament is one of the qualifying events for the Paris 2024 Olympics and performances at the Qatar meet will award the lifters, competing in the Olympic weight classes, with OQR points.
The competition will feature 10 weight categories for men and as many for women, with the top 10 athletes in each category securing Olympic quotas for their national teams based on their OQR (Olympic Qualification Ranking) points.
The top 10 athletes based on OQR, which will have one highest-ranked athlete per country in each weight category, will obtain Olympic quotas for their national teams after the qualification cycle ends in April 2024.
The OQR points will be based on the best total results (snatch + clean and jerk) the athletes manage to lift in qualifying competitions.
India at Weightlifting IWF Grand Prix II 2023
India will field five weightlifters – two women and three men. National champion Ajith Narayan and reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallist Achinta Sheuli will both be competing in the men’s 73kg division, which has 24 entries from 16 countries.
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist and a 2017 world champion, will look for a much-improved display in Qatar after a disappointing fourth-place finish at the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou.
Chanu, who lifted a total of 201kg (87kg+114kg) in Tokyo, could only manage 196kg (86kg+110kg) in Hangzhou, missing out on a medal by a whisker. She will face a tough challenge from China’s Hou Zhihui, who won the gold in Tokyo with a world record of 210kg (94kg+116kg), and Uzbekistan’s Muattar Nabieva, who clinched the silver in Hangzhou with 202kg (90kg+112kg).
Bindyarani Devi, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, will compete in the non-Olympic women’s 55kg weight division, which has 15 entries from 11 countries. Devi lifted a total of 178kg (80kg+98kg) at the Asian Games, finishing seventh in her category.
CWG bronze winner Gurdeep Singh will also compete in the men’s +109kg – another non-Olympic weight division, which has 16 entries from 12 countries. Singh lifted a total of 370kg (165kg+205kg) at the Asian Games, finishing sixth in his category.
