Indian Sports Calendar May 2024: Events to watch in third week

A couple of Olympic Qualifiers are scheduled this week.

Another jam-packed schedule awaits Indian sports fans over the next week in the Indian sports calendar, with several marquee events lined up across athletics, wrestling, cricket, badminton and shooting. Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra will play his first domestic tournament since the Tokyo Olympics, as he will be competing in the Federation Cup alongside various big names. A couple of Olympic Qualifiers are lined up in para-athletics, rowing, gymnastics, breaking and sports climbing. For rowers, it will be their last chance to win an Olympic quota.

The IPL also enters its final week in the league phase with the Playoffs race heating up. Kolkata Knight Riders have already secured their place in the final four while as many as six teams are competing for the remaining three spots in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the badminton action will resume this week as the caravan moves to Thailand. The last two Olympic trials for shooting (rifle and pistol) also get underway.

Major events to watch in May third week of Indian Sports Calendar

Athletics

Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, after a good start to the season at Doha, will play his first domestic competition since 2021. He is set to participate in the ongoing Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar. Several other Indian athletes will also be in action across Europe in different competitions eyeing Olympic berths.

  • May 12-15: Federation Cup 2024 (Ongoing)
  • May 15: 14th Filathlitikos International Jumping Meeting, Athens
  • May 18: B&S Kurpfalz Gala Weinheim, Germany
  • May 18: Orlen Janusz Kusocinski Memorial, Poland
  • May 19: Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athlétisme de Rabat

Badminton

After a week’s break, the badminton action will resume this week in Thailand. The players will look to do well. Focus will be on Satwik/Chirag and HS Prannoy who would like to win the title.

  • May 14-19: Thailand Open

Boxing

India will be sending 21 pugilists to Kazakhstan for the Elorda Cup. Nikhat Zareen and Shiva Thapa will lead the Indian contingent.

  • May 12-19: Elorda Cup

Breakdancing

The Olympic qualification series will take place this week. The break dancers will look to earn crucial points to climb up the rankings.

  • May 16-19: Break Dancing Olympic Qualifiers

Cricket

IPL 2024 has entered its last phase with teams racing to ensure a place in the playoffs. There is really tough competition for three spots with four teams (Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants) in the fray, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals will also have a say. The highest total in the IPL has already been rewritten twice this season.

Football

The Indian football landscape in this week of May will feature domestic tournaments including the Swami Vivekananda U20 Men’s National Football Championship and Women’s National Football Championships.

  • May 01-15: Senior Women’s National Football Championship (Ongoing)
  • April 12-22 May: Swami Vivekananda U20 Men’s National Football Championship (Ongoing)

Fencing

As many as four fencing tournaments are taking place this week. The Indian fencers will look to give their best.

  • May 17-18: Monal Challenge (Epee)
  • May 17-18: Sharjah World Cup (Epee)
  • May 17-19: Shanghai Grand Prix (Foil)
  • May 17-18: Plovdiv World Cup (Sabre)

Golf

  • May 13-20: Amundi Germany Masters (Ongoing)

Gymnastics

The Asian Championships will start this week and will be the last chance for Gymnasts looking to qualify for the Olympics. Dipa Karmakar will look to do well here to qualify for the Olympics in the Vault category.

  • May 16-26: Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships

Judo

Judo world championships will take place this week. India is sending nine judokas (2 men and 7 women) for the event in Abu Dhabi.

  • May 19-24: Judo World Championship

Para Sports

  • May 17-25: World Para Athletics Championships
  • May 13-19: Para Swimming World Series Championships, Singapore

Sepak takraw

  • May 7-26: ISTAF World Cup, Malaysia

Rowing

The Final Qualification Regatta will take place at the end of this week in Switzerland. This will be the last chance to qualify for the Olympics. Indian rowers would like to use this opportunity well to secure quota places for Paris.

  • May 19-21: Final Qualification Regatta

Shooting

The final Olympic Qualification trial is currently taking place in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This will decide which Indians will go to the Olympics.

  • May 10-19: Olympic Trials 3 and 4 (Rifle Pistol)

Sports Climbing

The Olympic qualification series is set to take place this week. The players will look to earn crucial points to climb up the rankings.

  • May 16-19: Olympic Qualifier Series

Squash

Ramit Tandon will be the lone Indian to participate in the World Championships. A couple of Indian players will also be in action in the challenger tournaments.

  • May 9-18: PSA World Championship (Ongoing)
  • May 14-18: ACE Challenger 6K 2024
  • May 14-18: Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Open 2024

Table Tennis

One feeder tournament will be happening this week. Focus will be on Manika Batra who after a great run at the Saudi Smash would like to do well here also.

  • May 13-17: WTT Feeder Cappadocia 2024

Tennis

India’s Rohan Bopanna is set to be in action in Rome. Bopanna and his doubles partner Matthew Ebden were knocked out in the opening round of the Madrid Open last week and will hope to put out a better performance at the Rome Masters.
