Ronaldo has earlier faced Georgia once.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Group F leaders Portugal aim to maintain their winning start at Euro 2024 when they face tournament debutants Georgia in their final group stage match at Arena AufSchalke. The 2016 Euro champions had a challenging start to their campaign, securing a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory against a resilient Czechia, thanks to a stoppage-time winner by substitute Francisco Conceição.
In that match, Portugal’s captain delivered an underwhelming performance, drawing widespread criticism from fans. However, in typical Cristiano Ronaldo fashion, he silenced his doubters with a strong showing against Turkey, providing an assist for Bruno Fernandes’ goal in a 3-0 win for Portugal. Ronaldo’s assist was his seventh at the Euros, the most by any player in the tournament’s history. Earlier, the Portuguese star broke the record for most appearances at the competition by featuring in his sixth European Championship.
Tournament newcomers Georgia, already eliminated from Euro 2024, became the 36th nation to participate in this competition. They hope to end their campaign on a high note as they face the formidable Portuguese side in their final match.
Ronaldo’s Record Against Georgia
In his illustrious international career, Ronaldo has amassed 130 goals in 209 caps for Portugal, but he has faced Georgia only once. A young Cristiano Ronaldo played against Georgia in a friendly fixture leading up to Euro 2008. His involvement in that match was limited to a goalless 45-minute outing, which Portugal won 2-0.
At that time, Ronaldo played for English giants Manchester United, where he had an outstanding season, winning both the Premier League and Champions League titles. Unfortunately, Cristiano couldn’t replicate his club form on the international stage as Portugal exited Euro 2008 in a thrilling quarter-final loss to eventual finalists Germany. Despite the Euros disappointment, Ronaldo won the first of his five Ballon d’Or awards that year.
Cristiano Ronaldo will aim to make his mark against an unfamiliar opponent in Georgia and finish the group stage on a high, carrying positive momentum into the decisive knockout rounds of Euro 2024.
