Copa America 2024: Colombia extend unbeaten streak to 25 games after dominating 3-0 win over Costa Rica
Diaz, Sanchez, and Cordoba on target in 3-0 rout.
Group D table-topper and tournament dark horse Colombia looked to build on their winning start in the 2024 Copa America when they faced a resilient Costa Rica at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Costa Rica came into this game on the back of an impressive goalless draw against Brazil.
Riding on a 24-game unbeaten streak, Colombia got the proceedings underway with their dominant ball possession as they looked to create chances in search of an early goal. Nestor Lorenzo’s side almost took the lead in the opening 20 minutes when James Rodríguez’s left-footed shot into the bottom right corner was saved by goalkeeper Patrick Sequeira.
Los Cafeteros amplified their attacking pressure on the Costa Rican goal, for which they were soon rewarded with a penalty after Patrick Sequeira committed a foul in the penalty area. Colombia’s superstar winger, Luis Diaz, stepped up to the occasion and converted the penalty to give his side a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute.
Los Ticos tried to get a foothold in the game by committing cynical fouls throughout the play to curb Colombia’s momentum and hurt them on the counterattack. The first half concluded with Colombia having a narrow 1-0 lead over Costa Rica.
After a disappointing first half, Gustavo Alfaro’s side began the second half brightly but were soon dealt a big blow when Jhon Arias’s cross was headed home by centre-back Davinson Sánchez, doubling Colombia’s lead in the 59th minute.
Just three minutes later, the game was put beyond Costa Rica’s reach when Colombia went 3-0 up through striker Jhon Córdoba’s top-left corner finish from a tight angle.
Despite having a healthy three-goal lead, Los Cafeteros continued to be relentless on the attacking front as they looked to achieve a statement win in their commanding march towards the knockout rounds of the competition.
Colombia was dominant in every department of the game as they extended their unbeaten streak to 25 games with a convincing 3-0 win over Costa Rica. Los Cafeteros are now firm favorites to finish as Group D table-toppers and carry this positive momentum into the decisive knockout rounds of Copa America 2024.
