Asian Games 2023 Day 1, September 24, Updated Results: Rowing, shooting combine for five medals
India won its first medal in Women's 10m Air Rifle team event.
On the first official day of the Asian Games 2023, India secured five medals. The women's 10m air rifle team, featuring Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ramita, won a silver in the team event, while Ramita also claimed a bronze in the individual event. In rowing, the men’s lightweight double sculls and men’s eight teams won silver medals, while the men’s pair settled for bronze.
The Indian women’s cricket team reached the final, guaranteeing at least a silver, and the Indian men’s hockey team achieved a decisive 16-0 victory against Uzbekistan. The Indian men’s football team, led by Sunil Chhetri, advanced to the Round of 16 after a 1-1 draw with Myanmar, but the women's team bowed out of Asian Games 2023.
India's star boxer Nikhat Zareen impressed by defeating two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam in the women's 50kg event, and Preeti Pawar also advanced to the women's 54kg quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the Indian men’s and women’s table tennis teams did not secure medals, and the men's volleyball team's medal hopes were dashed by Japan. Sumit Nagal delivered a strong performance in his tennis opener.
