Sumit Nagal will also compete in the men’s doubles event alongside Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic.

India’s Sumit Nagal is set to face Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. The fixture will take place on July 1 (Monday).

The Indian tennis star has been drawn in the first section of the top half for the grass-court Grand Slam. He will start his campaign against the 53rd ranked Kecmanović, who is also Serbian No. 4. The 24-year-old has won one singles ATP title and reached his career-best ranking of 27 in January 2023.

Additionally, he reached the third round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Kecmanović was seeded 25th for the Grand Slam, and he started his campaign against Australia’s John Millman. After stunning the Aussie in four sets, he recorded a resounding victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in the second round.

Nevertheless, he faced compatriot and eventual champion Novak Djokovic in the third round of 2022 Wimbledon. Kecmanović lost 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 against the top seed.

If Sumit Nagal wins against Kecmanović, he will face either Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta or the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor. Interestingly, if he manages to stay in form and reach the third round of his debut singles campaign at the Wimbledon Championships, he’s most likely to face ATP World No. #1 Jannik Sinner.

The Italian will commence his campaign against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann. Later, he’ll face either Matteo Berrettini or Márton Fucsovics in the second round. Jannik Sinner has won the Australian Open this year and he’s also the only Italian player to reach the top ranking.

He reached the semi-finals of the grass court Major last year. But was eliminated in the last four by eventual runner-up Novak Djokovic.

Grass isn’t Sumit Nagal’s favourite surface. However, if the 26-year-old manages to win a couple of matches, he’ll surely break into the top #60 of the ATP rankings. Nagal is currently 71st in the ATP rankings.
