Ronaldo face Kylian Mbappe led France in quarterfinal.
Tournament favorites Portugal avoided a major scare in the Euro 2024 round of 16 after they scraped past a resolute Slovenia 3-0 on penalties, courtesy of goalkeeper Diogo Costa’s heroics. Costa saved a record-breaking three penalties as the match ended 0-0 after extra time.
In the buildup to the knockout rounds, Portugal had a mixed group stage, finishing as table-toppers of a relatively easy-looking Group F but delivering underwhelming displays throughout.
With two wins and one loss, Roberto Martinez’s side was hot and cold with their performances. They started their campaign with a late 2-1 comeback win against Czechia, followed by a dominating 3-0 win against Turkey, but shockingly concluded with a 2-0 loss to newcomers Georgia in their final group game.
These consistently poor displays nearly punished Portugal against minnows Slovenia in the round of 16, but Diogo Costa’s individual brilliance in goal saved the Seleção das Quinas from an embarrassing early exit.
The 2016 Euro champions are set to face France at the Volksparkstadion in the quarterfinals. After finishing second in Group D, tournament favorites France edged past Belgium 1-0 in the round of 16, courtesy of a Jan Vertonghen own goal in the 85th minute.
Another concerning factor for Portugal is the dreaded form of their captain and star striker, Cristiano Ronaldo. After an underwhelming group stage showing, he failed to open his account against Slovenia, seeing his penalty saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak towards the end of the first half of extra time, leaving the Portuguese talisman in tears.
Ronaldo has enjoyed an unbelievable international career, scoring 130 goals in 211 caps for his country and holding the record for the most international goals scored by a male player in football history. During this period, the 39-year-old striker has had a mediocre record in Euro quarterfinals, scoring just one goal in four appearances.
Prior to Euro 2024, Ronaldo made it to four Euro quarterfinals out of a possible five since his tournament debut in 2004. His only quarterfinal goal came against the Czech Republic in Euro 2012, when he headed home the winner in the 79th minute to help Portugal secure a narrow 1-0 win and advance to the semifinals.
However, Portugal and Ronaldo were knocked out in the semifinal, losing to eventual champions Spain on penalties (4-2).
Heading into their crucial Euro 2024 quarterfinal fixture, France are slight favorites to beat Portugal and progress to the semifinal stage. Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to regain his usual goal-scoring form for such a massive game and potentially propel the Seleção das Quinas to yet another international triumph.
