The need for ‘good photos’ was the chuckling reason behind the arrest.
A man carrying a rucksack, black clothing and a face covering was seen on video wandering around the rafters of the Westfalenstadion, the home of Borussia Dortmund.
Although the game was momentarily stopped in the 35th minute due to a lightning storm, the man was discovered by authorities at 10:11 P.M. local time on Saturday during the second half of the last-16 encounter.
Prior to being apprehended by German military personnel on a walkway at 11:44 P.M., he was being watched by officers, a drone, and a helicopter. Despite being searched and placed in handcuffs, nothing hazardous was discovered.
The 21-year-old from Osnabruck, in northwest Germany, was reportedly carrying a camera in his rucksack, according to Dortmund police.
They said “at no point was there any danger to other people in the stadium” and that they are “currently ruling out a political motivation”.
“Initial investigations revealed that the man had already wanted to take photos of prominent buildings at great heights in Herne in April 2022 and in Ulm in May 2024,” the police said in a statement. They further added: “During questioning by the police on Sunday night, the man from Osnabruck stated that he only wanted to take ‘good photos’.”
“Uefa would like to commend the police, stadium and local authorities for their co-operation in the incident last night in Dortmund,”
Uefa added security measures will be “reviewed in all host venues” following the incident, with safety “in the stadium, on the pitch, and at team facilities” the “ultimate priority”.
Authorities claim that a man “wanted to take good photos” when he climbed onto the stadium roof during Germany and Denmark‘s Euro 2024 Round of 16 clash.
Germany advanced to the quarterfinals, where they are scheduled to face either Spain or Georgia on Friday, thanks to their 2-0 victory.
