The Blaugrana are looking to appoint a manager inclined to match their ideology on the pitch

The winds of change are blowing at FC Barcelona. After a season with no trophies and public friction with the club’s management regarding finances, Xavi Hernandez’s departure as manager is almost certain at the end of the 2023-24 season.

This has sent shockwaves through the Blaugrana faithful, leaving a crucial leadership position vacant. With President Joan Laporta taking time to reflect, speculation runs rampant about who will take the reins at Camp Nou.

Xavi Hernandes was brought in to manage the Barcelona side, with a lot of hopes and expectations from both fans as well as the management. Keeping in mind his playing career, Xavi couldn’t justify his name as the head coach of the top-notch club. Several questions have been raised about this philosophy in the game.

Here, we take a look at the top five names on Barcelona’s shortlist to replace Xavi:

5. Roberto De Zerbi

Known for his attacking, high-pressing style of play, Roberto De Zerbi has caught the eye with his impressive work at Brighton & Hove Albion. His brand of football is exciting and could breathe new life into Barcelona’s attack.

However, questions remain regarding his experience in major European competitions and his ability to manage a squad with a strong personality.

4. Thiago Motta

A former Barcelona midfielder who spent eight years at the club, Thiago Motta has made a name for himself as a rising managerial talent. Currently impressing at Bologna, Motta emphasizes possession and control, echoing Barcelona’s traditional approach.

His understanding of the club’s culture and playing style could be a significant advantage.  However, his lack of experience at the highest level might be a cause for hesitation.

3. Thomas Tuchel

Fresh off a successful stint at Chelsea, which included a Champions League triumph, Thomas Tuchel emerges as a potential option.

His tactical flexibility and ability to get the best out of his players are undeniable assets. Although Bayern Munich has given him a contract extension, Tuchel has declined the offer and can be another possible option for the Culers.

2. Rafa Marquez

A club legend and current manager of Barcelona B, Rafael Marquez holds a special place in the hearts of Barcelona fans. His understanding of the club’s philosophy and strong connection with La Masia graduates makes him a strong contender.

However, Marquez’s managerial experience is limited to the youth team, raising questions about his ability to handle the demands of the senior squad, especially on the global stage.

1. Hansi Flick

Topping the list is Hansi Flick, the recently departed manager of the German national team. Flick boasts a phenomenal managerial record, having led Bayern Munich to an unprecedented sextuple in 2020, including the Champions League and Bundesliga titles.

His brand of attacking, possession-based football aligns with Barcelona’s traditional style, and his experience in handling high-pressure situations would be invaluable. However, Flick’s hefty salary demands and potential interest from other top clubs might be hurdles for Barcelona to overcome with financial problems at stake.
