Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after India won the T20 World Cup 2024

Star India batter Virat Kohli has revealed what he told captain Rohit Sharma before they posed for the now-iconic photo with the Indian tricolour and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy. India won the tournament by defeating South Africa in the final in Barbados on June 29.

Virat Kohli starred with the bat as he top-scored with 76 runs, helping India put 176/7 after Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. Axar Patel, with 47 runs, and Shivam Dube, with 27 runs, also contributed to India’s total.

Then, the Indian pacers did well to bring the game back into India’s favour despite South Africa needing 30 runs in 30 balls at one point and a rampaging Heinrich Klaasen at the crease.

Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya starred in the death overs as South Africa were restricted to 169/8 and India won the final by seven runs to become two-time T20 world champions.

“Tu bhi utha le”- Virat Kohli told Rohit Sharma to carry the T20 World Cup trophy and pose for a photo

After the win, the Indian contingent took a lap of honour and posed for photos with the trophy. Two stalwarts of Indian cricket, Kohli and Rohit had a unique moment following India’s historic victory as they stood with the T20 World Cup trophy in their hands and the Indian flag on their back.

Opening up about that iconic photo with Rohit, former captain Kohli claimed that he had asked the skipper to hold the trophy for a while because he had been staying in the background, allowing the youngsters to revel in the glory.

It was a very special thing for him [Rohit] as well. His family is here, Samaira [Rohit’s daughter] was on his shoulder. But I just felt like in the victory lap he was behind the whole time. I told him, you also hold the trophy for a while, for two minutes. We should take a picture together because this journey has been very long,” Kohli told Star Sports.

Meanwhile, this final proved to be the last T20I match of both Rohit and Kohli as the duo announced their retirement from the shortest format. In 159 games, Rohit scored 4231 runs at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of 140.89. Kohli amassed 4188 runs in 125 T20Is at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04.
