Trent Boult hinted at his retirement from T20I cricket ahead of the PNG clash at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Not many expected that New Zealand would be one of the first few teams to be knocked out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. But that’s what happened. Kane Williamson and his men lost the first two games, despite the bowlers doing pretty well. But the batters failed, which pushed them out of the competition. New Zealand registered their maiden win of the tournament on Friday.
They beat Uganda by nine wickets in match No. 32 at the Brain Lara Stadium. The Kiwi fans are disappointed with the way the team has performed in the competition, but more than that, they didn’t expect Trent Boult to hint at his T20I retirement. The veteran pacer confirmed that this will be his last T20 World Cup for New Zealand.

After the game against Uganda, the left-arm pacer said in an interaction that the ongoing tournament would be his last appearance at the T20 World Cups. Boult picked up 2/7 in his four overs in the game and helped his team restrict Uganda to just 40 runs. Overall, he has taken 32 wickets in 17 matches at an economy rate of 6.07 at T20 World Cups. He has been part of the team since 2011.
Boult has been a key member of the team and has bowled many match-winning spells. But it looks like it has been done for him, and he wants to give chances to other young bowlers. The 34-year-old said, “Speaking on behalf of myself, this will be my last T20 World Cup.” Notably, in 2022, he decided to not take New Zealand central contract and focus on playing in franchise leagues around the world. The Black Caps exited the group stage after suffering defeats against Afghanistan and West Indies.
New Zealand will play their last match at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on Monday against PNG; that will be Boult’s last T20 World Cup game. However, he hasn’t confirmed yet that he will be available for the team in any capacity, but it will be a big blow for New Zealand. This has left the team to find out about other options. It will also see the start of a new generation taking responsibility. The current Kiwi squad has only three players below 30, and we might see some of them hang the boots in the coming years.
