Sanju Samson, Dube and Jaiswal were part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
On July 2, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the replacements of star cricketers Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the first two matches of the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.
The BCCI selectors named Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma and Harshit Rana as the replacements of Dube, Jaiswal and Samson for the first two T20Is. The five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe will be played from July 6 to 14 at the Harare Sports Club.
Earlier, the BCCI selectors had named Shubman Gill as the skipper of a young lineup for the Zimbabwe T20I series. The board included only Samson, Jaiswal and Dube from the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 squad for the Zimbabwe tour.
It is to be noted that opener Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh travelled with the Men in Blue for the T20 World Cup 2024 as travelling reserves, along with Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed. While Avesh and Gill returned home after the USA leg, Rinku and Khaleel stayed with the Indian squad.
Why will Jaiswal, Dube and Samson miss first two T20I matches against Zimbabwe?
Since Sunday, the Indian team has been stuck in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, which meant that all the operations, including the airport in the city, were shut down with immediate effect.
This also means that Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson, who were named in the squad for the Zimbabwe series, have been stranded there.
It is expected that the Men in Blue will depart from Barbados via a chartered flight on July 2 (Tuesday) and will reach India on July 3 (Wednesday) evening.
With the Zimbabwe T20I series scheduled to start on July 6, it is understood that Dube, Jaiswal and Samson will have to miss the first two matches. Hence, they have been replaced by Rana, Sudharsan and Jitesh.
India’s squad for 1st & 2nd T20I against Zimbabwe:
Shubman Gill (Captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande, Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Harshit Rana
