Jay Shah has eyes on the two ICC trophies next year for Team India.
After winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian team will aim to start a winning streak in ICC tournaments with two ICC trophies up for grabs next year. BCCI secretary Jay Shah is optimistic about India’s chances of winning the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
India defeated South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados by seven runs to end their ICC trophy drought. This was India’s first ICC title win since 2013 and their second T20 World Cup triumph, having won the inaugural edition in 2007.
Jay Shah, who was present in Barbados and handed the trophy to India captain Rohit Sharma at the presentation ceremony, said that the expectation was there in the 2023 World Cup as well, but India lost to Australia in the final in Ahmedabad.
“It was the same captain last year and the same here in Barbados. We won all games except the final in 2023 [ODI World Cup] as Australia played better. This time we worked even harder and played better to win the title,” Shah said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Apart from this, India had also lost the final of the World Test Championship in 2023, also to Australia.
Jay Shah says India will next target ICC World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy in 2025
The BCCI Secretary further stated that Team India’s next target is to win the World Test Championship final in England and the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in 2025.
“I would want India to win all the titles. We have the biggest bench strength, only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises. The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Shah added.
Meanwhile, the Indian team is still in Barbados due to a hurricane warning that forced the airport to be shut down. Currently, the Men in Blue are staying at the Hilton Hotel.
